Frequently asked questions.
What is a Doula?
A birth doula offers emotional and physical support to expectant families, supplying resources and preparation throughout the prenatal period, during labor, and shortly after the birth.
When should I hire a Doula?
The earlier you can secure your doula, the better. I recommend that you aim to have your doula in place by the start of your third trimester. It’s a good idea to begin your search during the second trimester. During our interview, we will go over all things birth and see if we are a right fit. You deserve someone with whom you can easily connect and who understands your personality and needs. If you identify as a planner or tend to experience anxiety, hiring a doula earlier in your pregnancy can be particularly beneficial. This gives you ample time to build a trusting relationship, ensuring you feel fully supported as you navigate your journey's emotional and mental ups and downs.
What is the difference between a Doula and a Midwife?
The primary distinction between a doula and a midwife is that a doula offers emotional and physical support during the childbirth process. In contrast, a midwife is a medical professional who delivers obstetric and gynecological care.
Do I need a Doula if I've given birth before?
Every birth process is unique and therefore having the experience of a Doula to guide you allows you to go through this journey with more ease. You will have questions about different sensations you are feeling and you can contact your Doula at any time to gain reassurance.
I have a planned cesarean, how will a Doula help?
A cesarean birth is still a valid birth experience. As your birth doula, I will continue to support and advocate for you while you prepare for surgery and recover afterward. Depending on hospital policies and your specific situation, I may be able to accompany you to the operating room. After the procedure, will be by your side in the recovery room, addressing any questions or concerns you and your family may have. I can help you understand what your care providers are discussing, ensure your comfort, and assist with bonding and breastfeeding, as well as guide you through the recovery process.
Will my Doula support an epidural?
Yes, I will support you with an epidural. Whether you choose medication or natural methods, I’m here to provide guidance and reassurance throughout your labor. My role is to help you feel comfortable and empowered, no matter your pain management choices.
How does a Doula affect birth outcomes and babies?
Studies show that the continuous presence of a doula results in:
● Reduced labor times
● Reduced need for pain medication and augmentation of labor
● Improved outcomes for the Parent and Baby
● Increased satisfaction with their labor and birth experience (for both parent and
partner)
● Increased likelihood of spontaneous vaginal birth, preventing cesareans
In addition, long-term benefits of labor support include:
● Improved breastfeeding
● Improved health of baby leading to shorter stays and fewer NICU admissions
● Decreased postpartum depression
● Greater maternal satisfaction
● Better parent-infant interaction
